There are, unfortunately, many ‘scholars’ in Islam that oppose the Ahl al-Bayt. Their works are full of claims that Imam al-Husayn’s stand at Karbala was a mistake and led to no good—only corruption and turmoil.

Ibn Tamiyya is one such scholar who is notable for holding this view. Another example of this can be found in the works of Ibn Khaldun. He argues that the Imam miscalculated his ability to oust Yazid; and his failure to do so led to this supposed ‘corruption and turmoil’.

A similar narrative can be found in the Bible. God commands Prophet Moses to appoint Aaron and his sons to minister as priests. Prophet Moses carries out an elaborate coronation to make Aaron's divinely appointed position official. This event bears an eerie resemblance to the event of Ghadir Khumm.

The Bible shares this narrative and describes an event where Moses asks God for a successor so that "the LORD’s community may not be like sheep that have no shepherd", to which God commands Prophet Moses to 'lay' his hand upon Joshua and appoint him as successor 'before the whole community'. This event interestingly shares a striking similarity with the event of Ghadir Khumm.

The Quran informs that Prophet Solomon was the successor of Prophet David (peace be upon them). The term used in the verse is warith which as a literal translation means 'inherited'. Muslim scholars, including bakrites, understand this to mean that he inherited his position as his successor, rather than material inheritance.

The Bible shares the view of this successorship. King David informs his wife Bathsheba that he will appoint her son Solomon as king. King David also directs his ministers to conduct an official public coronation to announce Solomon's rise to the throne. This coronation event takes place at Gihon Spring and reminds one of the coronation of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) at Ghadir Khumm.
